Ever since establishing a peg to the euro and a floor at 1.20 for EUR\/CHF two months ago, the euro has not gained much more over the Swiss franc.<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8578\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8578\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/111204_EURCHF.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/111204_EURCHF.png\" alt=\"EUR\/CHF has made little progress since the peg\" title=\"EUR\/CHF has made little progress since the peg\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/111204_EURCHF.png 500w, https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/111204_EURCHF-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EUR\/CHF has made little progress since the peg<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<strong>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freestockcharts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FreeStockCharts.com<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The latest proposed remedy is to tax offshore deposits and perhaps even return to negative interest rates. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/business\/feedarticle\/9974736\" title=\"Swiss govt could tax offshore deposits to tame franc\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian notes<\/a> that &#8220;negative deposit rates were imposed as the Swiss battled a red-hot currency in the 1970s, but they did little to weaken the franc.&#8221; {snip}<\/p>\n<p>I never cease to marvel at the difficulty some countries have in devaluing their currencies. Ben Bernanke once noted that it must always be possible to devalue a currency, otherwise a central bank could print enough paper to buy up all the assets of a given country (or countries even). In other words, eventually the market has to &#8220;wise up&#8221; and destroy a currency that is getting printed in such quantities. {snip}&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So, how to trade this setup?<\/p>\n<p>The on-going and looming downside potential in the euro means that playing franc devaluation with EUR\/CHF presents notable downside risks.
