Market breadth broke sharply from the S&P 500 with a large loss and return to the bottom of a trading range. A bearish breakdown in small caps provided the greatest pressure on market breadth. At the annual Jackson Hole confab for central bankers, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reemphasized the Fed’s concerns about inflation, and the message hit rate sensitive parts of financial markets like small caps and gold. Recently reported inflation numbers added to the urgency conveyed in Warsh’s tone and rhetoric. NVIDIA (NVDA) added to Friday’s selling pressure just a day after enjoying one of its largest post-earnings gains in quite some time. Thus, while the S&P 500 continued to exude bullish confidence, I am once again worrying about deterioration in the underlying market.

S&P 500 (SPY)

A week after the S&P 500 (SPY) lost 1.4%, the index rebounded for a fractional 0.5% gain for last week. The 20-day moving average (DMA) (dashed line) served as readily available support even with Friday’s intraday fade. Still, if the index slides below its 20DMA, a fresh topping pattern will loom thanks to the S&P 500 stopping short of its all-time high. An expanded relationship with Anthropic called Claudeforce contributed to CRM’s stunning 22.6% post-earnings surge. CRM helped to lift the entire software sector higher and provided a clincher on my counter-panic positioning in a number of software stocks including CRM. Unfortunately, a 7.0% post-earnings loss wiped out that profit. Zoom reported that second-quarter revenue rose roughly 5% to $1.28 billion and adjusted earnings exceeded expectations, but management’s third-quarter profit forecast came in below Wall Street estimates. As ZM teetered on 50DMA support, I bought call options and was rewarded the next day with a 6.9% rebound. I took profits and watched ZM close the rest of the post-earnings loss on Friday until sellers faded ZM to a 1.8% loss on the day.

Zoom Communications, Inc.
