However, this contraction was driven primarily by a surge in imports as businesses rushed to get ahead of anticipated tariffs. I assume a lot of traders were looking for an excuse to sell given the proximity of overhead resistance to the major indices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/system\/files\/gdp1q25-adv-chart-01.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The early morning gap down shook confidence, but buyers stepped in throughout the day, pushing indices off their lows and into strong closes. What\u2019s more promising is the after-hours action: Microsoft (MSFT) and Meta Platforms (META) rallied on earnings beats, lifting Nvidia (NVDA) as well. This sets the stage for a strong open on May 1st and potentially a strong start to the month of May&#8230;with key resistance setting the stage for a major proving ground for <a href=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2025\/04\/22\/tariff-tainted-oversold-period-finally-ends-the-market-breadth\/\">this strong bounce from oversold conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1196033822186410\" data-ad-slot=\"3478942445\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Stock Market Indices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>S&amp;P 500 (SPY)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 experienced a sharp gap down, erasing all of Monday\u2019s gains and falling as much as 2% intraday before sharply rebounding into the close. This set up the first major test\u2014resistance at the downtrending 50-day moving average (DMA) (red line). A potential gap up driven by strong tech earnings could take SPY above that resistance. A break above would set up a challenge of the more significant 200DMA (blue line).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I won\u2019t increase my bullishness on a gap up because of the close proximity of that 200DMA test. Like SPY, the tech laden index faces resistance at its 50DMA. If the NASDAQ clears that level, the gap to the 200DMA is wider than SPY\u2019s, presenting a more tempting short-term trade setup to the upside.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/85njD3Qw\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/85njD3Qw\/\" alt=\"The NASDAQ (COMPQ) surpassed its April 9th high and broke out above the 20DMA, challenging downtrending 50DMA resistance. The NASDAQ is even up slightly for April.\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2\" title=\"NASDAQ (COMPQ)\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>The <strong>NASDAQ<\/strong> (COMPQ) recovered off lows, 3% down, and closed near flat, setting up for a test of the downtrending 50DMA with room to run toward the 200DMA.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>IWM is once again teasing its bear market line. I entered call options after a second higher close above that level. Despite the pullback on the hiccup, I was unable to add to the position. I might try again before IWM tests its 50DMA resistance. After a breakout, IWM becomes especially attractive given the wide gap between its 50DMA and 200DMA\u2014greater than those for SPY or the NASDAQ.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/hkexmIFu\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/hkexmIFu\/\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.995249406175772;width:840px;height:auto\" title=\"iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM)\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em><strong>The <strong>iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM)<\/strong> confirmed a breakout above its bear market line and is approaching its 50DMA, offering wide upside room toward the 200DMA.<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Short-Term Trading Call With A Hiccup<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AT50<\/strong> (MMFI) = 38.2% of stocks are trading above their respective 50-day moving averages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AT200<\/strong> (MMTH) = 31.1% of stocks are trading above their respective 200-day moving averages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Short-term Trading Call<\/strong>: cautiously bullish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>AT50 (MMFI), the percentage of stocks trading above their 50DMAs, closed the day at 38.2% after a sharp rally from the morning&#8217;s gap down. Despite the day\u2019s GDP-fueled hiccup, buyers erased the morning losses, continuing an impressive pattern of strength. However, with resistance looming overhead, now is a good time to take my aggressive bullishness down to a short-term trading call of cautiously bullish. I do not plan to flip to neutral\/bearish until AT50 approaches or tests the overbought threshold at 70%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The longer-term indicator of market breadth, AT200 (MMTH), the percentage of stocks trading above their respective 200DMAs, is still trending higher from its recent low, but its movement is more sluggish and it remains in a broader downtrend. This longer-term caution added to my motivation to downgrade the short-term trading call to cautiously bullish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The volatility index (VIX) continues to support bullish momentum. The VIX spiked on the morning hiccup,  matching last week\u2019s highs before fading again. The fade reaffirmed the current downtrend in volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/bL1IjfiV\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/bL1IjfiV\/\" alt=\"The Volatility Index (VIX) continued its downtrend, digesting tariff drama and just barely reaching 50DMA support.\" title=\"Volatility Index (VIX)\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>The <strong>volatility index (VIX)<\/strong> spiked intraday but faded to continue its downtrend, reinforcing bullish market sentiment.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Equities: Hiccup<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Broadcom (AVGO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AVGO broke below its 200DMA earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2025\/03\/30\/bear-market-reasserts-itself-the-market-breadth\/\">prompting me to exit<\/a>. Now the stock is back above both its converged 200DMA and 50DMA\u2014technically bullish\u2014but with earnings coming soon, I am staying on the sidelines for now.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/hbm8GRka\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/hbm8GRka\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Broadcom (AVGO) regained both 50DMA and 200DMA resistance levels, signaling a bullish setup ahead of earnings.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spotify (SPOT)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SPOT rebounded 6.4% after a 3.5% post-earnings loss. The net move is now positive, and the stock looks set to resume its uptrend.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/MTqHSWTO\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/MTqHSWTO\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Spotify (SPOT) reversed its post-earnings loss with a 6.4% gain, suggesting a return to its previous uptrend.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Okta, Inc (OKTA)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>OKTA rebounded with the broader market after being \u201cthrown out with the tariff baby water.\u201d A recent addition to a midcap index sparked a 7.4% surge. A break above resistance from the previous highs should resume its post-earnings momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/2TwVQiSJ\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/2TwVQiSJ\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Okta (OKTA) soared 7.4% on index inclusion and continues rebounding from earlier tariff-related selling.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brinker International, Inc (EAT)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>EAT broke down beow 50DMA support with a 14.8% post-earnings drop. I expect EAT to test its 200DMA support in short order.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/02hhHw6f\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/02hhHw6f\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Brinker International (EAT) lost 14.8% post-earnings, breaking its uptrend and likely heading toward a 200DMA test.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Palantir Technologies Inc (PLTR)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PLTR remains strong and is approaching all-time highs. I hold a calendar call spread and expect continued strength into earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/nRmeYRLr\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/nRmeYRLr\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Palantir Technologies, Inc (PLTR) is nearing all-time highs after a 50DMA breakout and appears poised to continue rallying into earnings.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Snowflake (SNOW)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SNOW broke out above both its 50DMA and 200DMA. I am watching for a breakout above $160.41, targeting a return to $192\u2013193.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/8vDNdR7d\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/8vDNdR7d\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Snowflake (SNOW) cleared its 50DMA and 200DMA, targeting a breakout above $160.41 with upside potential toward prior highs.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Logitech (LOGI)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LOGI did not benefit from all the buying of computer equipment per the GDP report. The stock gapped down 3.6% post-earnings and remains well below converged 50 and 200DMA resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/ORquiaT9\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/ORquiaT9\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Logitech (LOGI) fell 3.6% post-earnings and remains below major resistance, showing no benefit from tariff-driven tech equipment demand.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First Solar (FSLR)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>FSLR dropped 8.3% on earnings and remains below important support from November 2023. I will wait for a move above $144 before considering the stock for a contrarian play.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/UXQnHm7J\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/UXQnHm7J\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>First Solar (FSLR) fell 8.3% post-earnings, breaking key support and extending its bearish trend.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Teladoc (TDOC)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>TDOC continues its erratic behavior and is once again near all-time lows. I am avoiding this red-flag stock entirely. A stock that delivers such major fake breakouts is too dangerous for me. (<a href=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2025\/02\/16\/familiar-theme-as-indices-leave-latest-troubles-behind-the-market-breadth\/\">I was fooled in February<\/a> but fortunately I did not chase the stock higher).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/QCHg8G01\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/QCHg8G01\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Teladoc (TDOC) dropped 13.6% post-earnings and trades near all-time lows, making it too risky for long or short plays.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Snap Inc (SNAP)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SNAP lost 12% after withdrawing guidance. Despite its bearish setup, I see a buying opportunity if it can hold April\u2019s lows. Technically, it delivered a fake breakout above 50DMA resistance just ahead of earnings. SNAP is a reminder of the dangers of getting lulled into countertrend trading based on technicals ahead of a major event like earnings. As a reminder I am hanging on to SNAP on speculation of some kind of M&amp;A deal down the road based on a member of Yahoo joining the SNAP board.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/taubdrcL\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/taubdrcL\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Snap (SNAP) fell 12% post-earnings after withdrawing guidance, but could offer a buying opportunity if it holds April lows.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Caterpillar, Inc (CAT)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CAT gapped up, dropped 1.5%, and then rebounded for a 0.6% post-earnings gain. The stock is staring down 50DMA resistance as it now struggles to finish reversing its tariff-related losses. I may use CAT as a put-option hedge if it tests the 50DMA.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/DNYrvP8i\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/DNYrvP8i\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Caterpillar Inc (CAT) posted a 0.6% gain after an intraday selloff and is nearing a key 50DMA test with potential as a hedge play.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Vita Coco Company (COCO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>COCO popped 4.8% post-earnings, clearing its 50DMA and 200DMA. I want to buy COCO on a higher close.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/RcgGwwb7\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/RcgGwwb7\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>T<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>he Vita Coco Company (COCO) jumped 4.8% post-earnings, clearing major moving averages and setting up a potential buy.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Freshworks Inc (FRSH)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>FRSH had a volatile post-earnings day, ultimately gaining 3%. I bought call options and shares near the 200DMA. Strong earnings sets up a potential test of the last March high.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/9xtgNd07\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/9xtgNd07\/\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Freshworks Inc (FRSH) gained 3% in a volatile session and is poised to challenge prior highs after strong earnings and technical support.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>United States Oil Fund (USO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>USO fell 3.5%, nearing April\u2019s tariff lows.
