For much of this time, analysts and commentators seemed to focus on company-specific problems as the blame. It seemed competitor Juniper Networks (JNPR) was dancing circles around the lumbering giant. The performance gap between the two companies reached a peak earlier this spring. Since then, JNPR has fallen precipitously. <a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2011\/08\/10\/cisco-812-year-lows\/\" title=\"Chart Review: Cisco Hits 8 1\/2 Year Lows (And Juniper Is In Hot Pursuit)\" target=\"_blank\">CSCO finally printed a bottom in August with 8 1\/2 year lows<\/a>. The performance gap between CSCO and JNPR has suddenly shrunk dramatically; CSCO&#8217;s problems are no longer theirs alone.<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7277\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7277\" style=\"width: 483px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/110916_CSCOvsJNPR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/110916_CSCOvsJNPR.jpg\" alt=\"Cisco Systems is catching up to Juniper Networks\" title=\"Cisco Systems is catching up to Juniper Networks\" width=\"493\" height=\"316\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/110916_CSCOvsJNPR.jpg 493w, https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/110916_CSCOvsJNPR-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cisco Systems is catching up to Juniper Networks<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<strong>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/stockcharts.com\/h-sc\/ui?s=CSCO:JNPR&#038;p=D&#038;yr=3&#038;mn=0&#038;dy=0&#038;id=p26097023697\" title=\"Cisco versus Juniper\" target=\"_blank\">Stockcharts.com<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>When this CSCO vs. JNPR price ratio increases another 16% to .95, it will be time to consider a possible pairs trade. {snip}<\/p>\n<p>Fundamental valuations on both CSCO and JNPR are at decade lows; thus, neither stock has a relative valuation advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2003, <a href=\"http:\/\/moneycentral.msn.com\/investor\/invsub\/results\/compare.asp?Page=TenYearSummary&#038;symbol=JNPR\" title=\"JNPR 10-year summary on fundamental ratios\" target=\"_blank\">JNPR has only closed the year with a trailing P\/E below 25 once<\/a> {snip}<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/moneycentral.msn.com\/investor\/invsub\/results\/compare.asp?Page=TenYearSummary&#038;symbol=CSCO\" title=\"CSCO 10-year summary of financial ratios\" target=\"_blank\">CSCO has never closed a (fiscal) year<\/a> with a trailing P\/E as low as the current 14. {snip}<\/p>\n<p>Finally, note that JNPR is currently trying to support its stock with a major stock buyback program.
