While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/25\/fed-minutes-may-2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting on the minutes suggest the content contained nothing new<\/a>, the stock market found rally material anyway. Perhaps it was a relief rally from <a href=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2022\/05\/23\/oversold-ends-with-dimon-push-and-snap-pull-the-market-review\/\">the fallout in social media stocks<\/a>. The broad-based buying pushed the stock market out of a one day long oversold period. Blink and you missed the latest oversold period. However, given the gyrations that typically follow Fed news, yet another oversold period is likely right around the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Stock Market Indices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 (SPY) followed the previous day&#8217;s buying off the intraday lows to notch a 1.0% gain. The index even closed at a new (marginal) high for the week. The band between the May, 2021 low and the bear market line is looking more and more like the latest churn zone for the S&amp;P 500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/ed243xgl\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/ed243xgl\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\" alt=\"The S&amp;P 500 (SPY) gained 1.0% and closed at a marginal new high for the week.\" title=\"S&amp;P 500 (SPY)\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong><em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/ed243xgl\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\">S&amp;P 500<\/a> (SPY) gained 1.0% and closed at a marginal new high for the week.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The NASDAQ (COMPQX) fell far short of its high for the week despite a 1.5% gain. While the VIX remains &#8220;elevated&#8221; above 20, this chart hardly has fear written all over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/rDWIj7t3\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/rDWIj7t3\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\" alt=\"The volatility index (VIX) faded to a 3.7% loss as it extends its churn.\" title=\"volatility index (VIX)\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong><em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/rDWIj7t3\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\">volatility index<\/a> (VIX) faded to a 3.7% loss as it extends its churn.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-short-term-trading-call-with-a-promising-divergence\"><strong>The Short-Term Trading Call After A Blink of An Oversold Period<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-8746fb62-8c65-4cd8-aa26-5b377e48018f\"><li><strong>AT50<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/sRQqTtzA\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\">MMFI<\/a>) = 23.7% of stocks are trading above their respective 50-day moving averages (ending 1 day oversold)<\/li><li><strong>AT200<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/pjybc6LC\/?offer_id=10&amp;aff_id=29373\">MMTH<\/a>) = 22.8% of stocks are trading above their respective 200-day moving averages<\/li><li><strong>Short-term Trading Call<\/strong>: cautiously bullish<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/t2108-resource-page\/\">AT50<\/a> (MMFI), the percentage of stocks trading above their respective 50DMAs, dropped into a marginal and 1-day oversold period. The previous day my favorite technical indicator closed at 19.7%. Today, AT50 jumped to 23.7% and brought a quick end to oversold conditions. It was a blink driven by strong buying off the lows (I found the buying a bit eerie given it occurred in the wake of news of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/victims-uvalde-texas-school-shooting-174116872.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the slaughter of children and teachers in Texas in yet another mass shooting in America<\/a>). The noncommittal trading in and out of oversold conditions looks like a key characteristic of this phase of bear market trading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The indices hid the true excitement of the day: retail stocks. <a href=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2022\/05\/20\/apple-sits-out-latest-bear-market-bounce-the-market-breadth\/\">Retailers dragged the market down last week<\/a>, but they were stars today. The SPDR\u00a0S&amp;P\u00a0Retail ETF (XRT) rallied 6.9% on what looked like machines going wild. The best description is a snapshot of the double digit gains from the top 20 stocks in XRT. I used this opportunity to try a short as a small hedge on my bullish bias in short-term trading positions.
