The &#8220;Aussie&#8221; closed the week up over 2% against the U.S. dollar. The currency made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/news\/2010-12-31\/aussie-surges-to-post-float-high-as-growth-signs-boost-demand.html\">fresh all-time highs since it was freely floated against the dollar in 1983<\/a>. The monthly view shows that the ride has been a wild one to get to this point (data available only to 1990).<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3783\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3783\" style=\"width: 527px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/101231_AUDUSD-monthly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/101231_AUDUSD-monthly.jpg\" alt=\"The Australian dollar continues to soar against the U.S. dollar\" title=\"The Australian dollar continues to soar against the U.S. dollar\" width=\"537\" height=\"332\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/101231_AUDUSD-monthly.jpg 537w, https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/101231_AUDUSD-monthly-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Australian dollar continues to soar against the U.S. dollar<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>This latest surge pushes the specter of (global) deflation ever further behind as commodities, Australia&#8217;s greatest exports, continue to gain in price and value. This strength also provides a sharp and interesting contrast to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyfx.com\/forex\/fundamental\/article\/special_report\/2010\/12\/31\/Swiss_Franc_to_Strengthen_on_Euro_Zone_Fiscal_Crisis_in_2011.html\">the supposed &#8220;flight for safety&#8221; seen in the fresh all-time highs printed by the Swiss franc<\/a> and the stubborn strength in the yen.<\/p>\n<p>The Aussie also printed yet another head and shoulders (H&#038;S) fake-out. At the end of November, <a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2010\/11\/30\/australian-vs-us-dollar\/\">I pondered whether the Aussie had finally topped out while noting that the last H&#038;S pattern over the summer gave way to a strong rally<\/a>. The S&#038;P 500 will close the year up about 13% and now yields 1.9%. So, our stock market went nowhere when priced in Australian dollars &#8211; an apt metaphor for a stock market that is floating on an ever-increasing pile of printed paper.
