{"id":2785,"date":"2010-10-01T07:16:21","date_gmt":"2010-10-01T11:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/?p=2785"},"modified":"2010-10-01T07:54:37","modified_gmt":"2010-10-01T11:54:37","slug":"soaring-september-for-solar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2010\/10\/01\/soaring-september-for-solar\/","title":{"rendered":"A Soaring September for Solar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian Solar (CSIQ): 20%<br \/>\nEvergreen Solar (ESLR): 20%<br \/>\nYingli Green Energy (YGE): 14%<br \/>\nJA Solar Holdings (JASO): 11%<br \/>\nTrina Solar (TSL): 10%<br \/>\nReneSola (SOL): 9%<\/p>\n<p>These solar companies are the top six performing solar companies in my watchlist&#8230;.not for the month or the year, but for the last TWO DAYS. While only three of the stocks in the list above are up for the year &#8211; JASO, TSL, and SOL, September ended appropriately with many stocks accelerating gains on the month and the year on very good volume. <\/p>\n<p>In early September, I finally recognized that a strong bull run was underway in many solar stocks (<a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2010\/09\/03\/a-stealth-rally-in-solar-stocks\/\">Part 1<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2010\/09\/07\/solar-stealth-rally-part2\/\">Part 2<\/a> for starters), but I still did not anticipate just how well these stocks would perform over the course of just one month. The S&#038;P 500 was up 9% for the month (and now running for 16 straight days <a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2010\/09\/25\/important-follow-through\/\">in overbought conditions<\/a>), but the two solar ETFs, TAN and KWT, were up 18% and 17% respectively. Both indices are still down significantly for the year, so they cannot convey just how well the strongest solar stocks have fared. <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/banking-budgeting\/article\/110827\/macro-forces-in-market-confound-stock-pickers\">A recent WSJ article<\/a> featured a number of money managers who complained about the inability to distinguish themselves because of high correlations amongst stocks and macro-economic forces. Perhaps they need to investigate solar stocks given the sector&#8217;s wide divergence in performance this year.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of the top performers for September which out-performed the solar indices:<\/p>\n<p>Ascent Solar Technologies (ASTI): 52%<br \/>\nJASO: 52%<br \/>\nLDK Solar: 51%<br \/>\nSOL: 43%<br \/>\nCSIQ: 39%<br \/>\nSunPower Corporation (SPWRA and SPWRB): ~34%<br \/>\nSolarfun Power Holdings (SOLF): 25%<br \/>\nSuntech Power Holdings (STP): 25%<br \/>\nYGE: 24%<\/p>\n<p>Here are the top performers for the year that have gains:<br \/>\nJinko Solar (JKS): 187% (since its IPO May 14, 2010)<br \/>\nSOL: 163%<br \/>\nPower-One Inc (PWER): 109% (I missed this one in my earlier posts on solar-related stocks in bull rallies)<br \/>\nSOLF: 72%<br \/>\nJASO: 64%<br \/>\nGT Solar International (SOLR): 51%<br \/>\nLDK: 47%<br \/>\nTSL: 12%<br \/>\nFSLR: 9%<\/p>\n<p>Now with another earnings season around the corner, expectations are set extremely high for the solar space. Many solar companies beat expectations last quarter and raised earnings, revenues, and\/or production guidance for the third quarter. So, I will be watching earnings throughout the space more closely than ever.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, I present a sample of charts of solar stocks that achieved important milestones in the last week. I wish I could post all the charts because each one has interesting (and mostly bullish) features. (<a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2010\/09\/28\/ldk-secures-its-future\/\">I covered LDK in an earlier post<\/a> and have posted my trades on twitter &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/search\/LDK%20downgrade\">click here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/search\/LDK%20correction\">here<\/a>. Finally, I also covered <a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2010\/09\/21\/first-solar-breaks-out\/\">FSLR&#8217;s breakout<\/a> in an earlier post.).<\/p>\n<p>Trina Solar (TSL) is finally challenging its all-time highs again. Buying volume surged in the last two days. The stock is also at the beginning of what is known as a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/technical\/04\/030304.asp\">Bollinger Band squeeze<\/a>&#8221; which typically leads to a strong and sustained move. A squeeze occurs as volatility shrinks, leading to an eventual burst of buying (or selling). It still has a ways to go, but the surge to close out September has delivered an important break-out for YGE.
