{"id":20501,"date":"2013-11-27T01:14:31","date_gmt":"2013-11-27T09:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/?p=20501"},"modified":"2013-11-27T01:14:31","modified_gmt":"2013-11-27T09:14:31","slug":"australian-dollar-intervention-remains-part-of-the-toolkit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2013\/11\/27\/australian-dollar-intervention-remains-part-of-the-toolkit\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Stevens Delivers: Australian Dollar Intervention &#8220;Remains Part of the Toolkit&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(This is an excerpt from an article I originally published on Seeking Alpha on November 21, 2013. <a href=\"http:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/1853881-governor-stevens-delivers-australian-dollar-intervention-remains-part-of-the-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read the entire piece<\/a>.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/1845542-australian-dollar-seems-headed-for-near-term-drift-according-to-latest-statement-on-monetary-policy\" target=\"_blank\">I noted earlier this week<\/a>, I was eagerly anticipating the release of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rba.gov.au\/monetary-policy\/rba-board-minutes\/2013\/05112013.html\" target=\"_blank\">the minutes from the last policy meeting of the Reserve Bank of Australia<\/a> (RBA) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rba.gov.au\/speeches\/2013\/sp-gov-211113.html\" target=\"_blank\">a speech by Governor Glenn Stevens at the Australian Business Economists&#8217; Annual Dinner<\/a>. I have not fully processed the minutes, but they had little impact on the Australian dollar (FXA) anyway as they contained no new headline information. I did process Governor Stevens&#8217; speech as his words once again greased the skids for the Australian dollar. <\/p>\n<p>The speech was aptly titled &#8220;The Australian Dollar: Thirty Years of Floating.&#8221; Stevens had five main topics: the historical reason for floating the currency in 1983, a description of how the market has evolved since then, a related discussion on how the exchange rate has behaved since then and the impact of the float, a review of whether the exchange rate has been mispriced, and, finally, a discussion of intervention.
