The apparent economic improvement seems to be unfolding just <a href=\"http:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/1446001-the-british-pound-is-a-bargain\" target=\"_blank\">as Mervyn King seemed to suggest<\/a> in his final appearance as Governor at the Bank of England&#8217;s (BoE) Inflation Report almost two months ago. However, this news was drowned out by the much larger upward momentum that has carried <a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2013\/07\/06\/t2108-update-130705\/\" target=\"_blank\">the U.S. dollar index to a major breakout<\/a>. This muffling is quite similar to the way the market ignored the positive news coming out of May&#8217;s Inflation Report for almost three weeks before the British pound (FXB) finally rallied (and swiftly!).<\/p>\n<p>This time around, an additional downward catalyst came from within. New BoE governor Mark Carney threw buckets of ice water on the encouraging economic reports by aiming a healthy dose of jawboning at rising interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>First, the bevy of economic news from last week.<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18663\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/130705_GBPUSD.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/130705_GBPUSD.png\" alt=\"The ever volatile British pound\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/130705_GBPUSD.png 500w, https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/130705_GBPUSD-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ever volatile British pound<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>On July 17th, the minutes from last <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/publications\/Pages\/news\/2013\/007.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Thursday&#8217;s decision from the BoE&#8217;s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)<\/a> should reveal whether or not Carney specifically argued for more stimulus. However, the BoE came up with a trick that was just as effective in generating the desired market reaction. {snip}<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Given the steady improvement in the UK economy, I once again think the sell-off is way overdone.
