{"id":18356,"date":"2013-06-11T22:48:16","date_gmt":"2013-06-12T05:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/?p=18356"},"modified":"2013-06-11T22:48:16","modified_gmt":"2013-06-12T05:48:16","slug":"record-iron-ore-shipment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/2013\/06\/11\/record-iron-ore-shipment\/","title":{"rendered":"A Record Iron Ore Shipment As Prices and the Australian Dollar Plunge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(This is an excerpt from an article I originally published on Seeking Alpha on June 11, 2013. <a href=\"http:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/1493292-a-record-iron-ore-shipment-as-prices-and-the-australian-dollar-plunge\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read the entire piece<\/a>.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Port Hedland Port Authority along the northern coast of Western Australia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phpa.com.au\/About-us\/News-and-announcements\/News\/ANOTHER-SINGLE-SHIPMENT-RECORD-FOR-THE-PHPA.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">reported on June 10th<\/a> surprising news on an iron ore shipment:<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>The Port does not report the value of the cargo, so we might have at least two interpretations &#8211; one from the demand perspective and one from the supply perspective&#8230; {snip}<\/p>\n<p>Supporting the demand perspective for explaining this large shipment is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/06\/05\/australia-hedland-ironore-idUSL3N0EH0YX20130605\" target=\"_blank\">a recent Reuters story<\/a> reporting the large amount of iron ore exported from Australia to China in May while prices were tumbling:<\/p>\n<p>{snip}<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the plunging Australian dollar (FXA) is making Australian iron ore even cheaper by the day. <\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18361\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/130611_AUDUSD.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/130611_AUDUSD.png\" alt=\"The Australian dollar on the edge of a major crescendo\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/130611_AUDUSD.png 500w, https:\/\/drduru.com\/onetwentytwo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/130611_AUDUSD-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Australian dollar on the edge of a major crescendo<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nSource: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freestockcharts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FreeStockCharts.com<\/a><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>I earlier argued that <a href=\"http:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/1484251-a-crescendo-looms-for-the-australian-dollar-even-as-traders-cast-about-for-new-forex-leader\" target=\"_blank\">the Australian dollar is reaching some kind of crescendo<\/a>. It seems even clearer now that the timing of that final washout in the currency will be a complex interplay between expectations for another RBA rate cut in July; Chinese steel production, steel prices; and iron ore prices, inventories, and shipments. With so many related extreme movements and levels happening at once, the crescendo should prove quite sharp and abrupt.
